11 Neat Ways to Donate, Sell Or Give Away Used Books

Books, like many of our treasured belongings, often simply rot away on our shelves and become clutter because we no longer have a current need for them, but because we loved them, we don't want to just throw them away. But, left unused for long periods of time, the fate of our beloved books is to collect dust, turn yellow, fall apart, and even smell bad. Objects that go unused for years create stagnant or stuck energy in our homes that affect our mood, drain our energy and may even make it harder to function and use your storage shelves easily.

Kids Organizer Bins

Is this what you intended when you bought the books? I know parting with books is challenging. It helps if you can focus on the benefits and value of passing them on. Like sharing the insights or entertainment you got out of the book with others.

Kids Organizer Bins

By donating or giving away books you no longer need, you get to contribute value to others while also making more room in your own home or office to function with ease. Think of how much shelf space you could reclaim.

Plus, if you donate your books (including books on tape or CD) to a charity and itemize deductions, you can deduct the value of the books on your income tax return. Web-based tools like It's Deductible make it easy to figure out what the books are worth.

Where to Give Your Books Away

Your Local Library - Unfortunately, many libraries don't take book donations anymore. But some do, so it is worth finding out if there is a library near you that will take your books, even if your hometown does not. Note: Libraries often take Books on CD and Books on Tape, Videos, DVDs, and Music CDs and Tapes too.
JustGIVE.org - This site provides a list of places to donate just about anything. Whether you want to donate Books, Furniture, Household Good and Clothing, Computers, Cars, Cell Phones, Pet Supplies, Eyeglasses, your Hair, or even your Organs, you can find a resource here.
Friends of Libraries, USA - This group is currently accepting donations to rebuild libraries affected by hurricanes and more. You can ship books to them. Address: 1420 Walnut St, Suite 450 Philadelphia, PA 19102-4017 Call: 215-790-1674 or 1-800-9FOLUSA folusa.org
Vietnam Veteran's Association - Offers both pick up service and drop off service. There is a limit on the number of books you can donate at one time. Not all areas have pick up service, but some offer a monthly pick up.
Freecyle.org - List ads for free and give books or anything else away. Be careful in screening who you allow to come to your home. For safety, arrange a public meeting place to deliver the books.
BookCrossing.com - This website is a really fun way to share books. You register your book, leave it in a public place, someone else picks it up, notes it on the website, then does the same. You get to track your books travels after you give it way.
Housing Works in NYC - 126 Crosby Street, NYC 10012 (212-334-3324) You can drop off or ship books to them. They work to end homelessness and AIDS in NYC.
Craigslist.org - Free ad listing website lets you give books and anything else away. Be careful. Avoid giving your address to strangers. For safety, arrange a public meeting place to deliver the books.
Bridge to Asia's Textbook and Journal Donation Program - Got old textbooks and professional journals? This group wants college, graduate and professional level teaching and research materials. They accept books, journals and other forms of information both used and new. Visit bridge.org
PaperbackSwap.com - Here you can mail your books in (usually costs .59 per book)and get credits. Then you can use your credits to get books you want.
BooksThroughBars.org - What better way to rehabilitate someone than through education and reading? This program provides books to prisoners. Before sending books, make sure you check the rules on what types of reading material each prison allows.

Also consider FIRSTBOOK.org - They don't take books, but you can donate to help kids in need get their "first books."

BONUS Clutter Flow Tip: Set up a donation bin, just as you would a recycle or trash bin. Collect books and other items you no longer need. Once a week, on the same day as trash day, check if the bag or box is full and donate as needed. I keep a donation back on a hook in my closet for clothing I no longer need. Automate the process any way you can and set up a reminder in your calendar or phone. Once you get in the habit it will feel almost effortless.

Top 10 Tips For Getting Along With Co-Workers

Getting along with your coworkers is just as important as getting along with the boss. And because there are usually so many more coworkers than supervisors, it requires additional effort. As a rule, however, getting along is just a matter of tolerance, respect, and courtesy.

Kids Organizer Bins

1. Don't use coworkers as therapists.

Kids Organizer Bins

2. If you borrow it, return it. If you borrow it more than twice, get your own.

3. If you have a problem with someone, talk to THEM about it, not everyone else in the office.

4. Focus on YOUR work, not what other people are doing. Supervising output is your boss's job. The only exception is when someone else's low productivity is affecting your own.

5. Understand the limits of your authority. Don't overstep your boundaries.

6. Don't bring your kids to work on a regular basis, or for extended periods of time. A couple of hours because of an emergency situation is usually not a problem as long as the child is quiet. However, keeping your kids with you for an entire day because the babysitter needed a day off is unacceptable.

7. Don't brag about anything, including your salary, promotion, kids, and so on.

8. Don't balance your checkbook on office time. Ditto for placing an online order, addressing wedding invitations, and so on. People understand short personal phone calls and emergencies, but they don't appreciate seeing you get paid to manage your life.

9. Don't monopolize shared equipment. This includes copiers, printers, or any other commonly used piece of equipment.

10. Don't fund raise at the office. If you really must do it, place brochures or literature in the break room; if someone is interested, they can contact you.

Your Absolute Camping Gear Necessities

There is nothing worse than driving to the campground, finding the perfect campsite, opening up the trunk, and finding that you forgot to pack your sleeping bag, a can opener, or worse yet, the tent itself! So, before heading out on your next camping trip, plan ahead and make a list of the absolute necessities you will need to bring with you to the campsite. You can use this camping gear checklist or make one yourself and add your own camping gear necessities as you see fit. Check off each item as you pack up the car or prepare everything ahead of time and keep them in large storage bins that you can just carry out together for those last minute camping excursions.

Kids Organizer Bins

Shelter is the most important thing you need to consider for any camping trip, whether it is for just one night at the nearby lake in the middle of spring or for an entire week at a campsite three states away in the dead of winter. Your camping shelter necessities should include a tent that is made for the terrain and weather conditions, tent stakes to keep the tent from blowing away, a sleeping bag with an appropriate temperature rating, and a tarp to protect your camping gear or to be used with your tent for added protection from cold, sun, or rain. You might also want to add a sleeping pad, a pillow, or rope to use with the tarp for added comfort.

Kids Organizer Bins

Cooking gear is the next most important camping necessity every camper needs to consider. Unless you are trying to become the next contestant on Survivor, you will want to take with you the necessary items needed to cook any food you brought, caught, or shot! Your camping cooking necessities should include a cooler, butane lighter, propane camping stove, extra propane, pots and pans, a can opener, and one set of dishes and utensils for each person in your camping party. Of course, do not forget about bottled water for drinking, cooking, and cleaning, as well as whatever food items you want to bring with you on your camping trip. Also, bring along a bag of charcoal to use in the campground grill!

Personal hygiene is another important concern when packing for your next camping trip. Unless you really want to be roughing it you should make sure you have the following hygiene items with you on all your outdoor adventures. You will need your tooth brush, toothpaste, soap, toilet paper, hand sanitizer, wash rag, towel, nail clippers, and contact lens solution. If you are really concerned with how you look (and perhaps smell) to the other campers, you might also want to include a hairbrush, razor, dental floss, and unscented deodorant. Anything you bring with you that has an odor will only attract bugs or animals to your campsite, so avoid scented products.

First aid and safety is the final thing you should worry about when it comes to your camping gear necessities. You never know what adventures your camping trip will bring you, so you need to be prepared for both the best and the worst. You can buy a premade first aid kit or put one together yourself that includes any medications you take, aspirin, antiseptic cream, burn ointment, sunburn lotion, sun block, hydrogen peroxide, snake bite kit, eye wash, Band-Aids, medical tape, gauze, scissors, and tweezers. For your personal camping safety, you should also be sure to pack a flashlight, extra batteries, compass, cell phone, utility knife, pen and paper, water filter, whistle, and a small toolkit.

Bringing these camping gear necessities will ensure you a comfortable and safe camping trip, no matter where or when you go. From here everything else you bring with you on your camping trip is for your own personal comfort and enjoyment, so add those camping items as you see fit and enjoy the great outdoors!

The Top 11 Organizing Tips For a More Efficient Life

Are you one of those people who spend hours looking for an item, wasting precious time and energy? Do you get frustrated when you can't locate an item and find yourself at the store spending money to buy something you know you already possess? Are you ready to take that first step to organize your life and world? If so, below are some helpful tips that I use and that you can start using today!

Kids Organizer Bins

1. Take an inventory of everything you want or need to organize (e.g., clothes, shoes, kitchen gadgets, tools, books, pictures, documents, bills, office supplies, etc.).

Kids Organizer Bins

2. From your inventory, you should get a clear idea of what types of storage units you need to purchase, unless you already have boxes or storage units lying around the house. Storage units may include, but are not limited to, storage boxes/bins, garment bags, drawers, filing boxes/cabinets, other home/garage cabinets, cupboards, sheds, and storage company units. Whenever possible, purchase storage units that you can see through.

3. If you don't already possess one, purchase a fire-proof filing cabinet, with legal size drawers for legal documents. Filing cabinets store your most important documents, such as birth certificates, account information, titles, deeds, warranties, receipts, and tax-related information.

4. Use existing shelves or build new shelves in your house, basement, or garage. Shelves can hold a lot of objects, boxes, and storage units.

5. Give serious thought as to where you want to store each group of items. Should the items go in your house, basement, garage, or shed? Items you use most often should probably be stored in your house. Conversely, items that you don't use as often should be moved to the basement, garage, or shed.

6. When you are ready to start organizing, commit to organizing one room at a time. Don't move to another room until the first one is organized exactly the way you had planned. This will result in less stress, as you won't feel so overwhelmed by the huge project ahead of you.

7. As you sort through items, consider which items you want to retain or toss. Do you really need that old baseball glove or prom dress? Get rid of the items that you don't need. You can always pass them on to a family member or friend, or donate them to a worthy cause. If you haven't used an item in at least three years, and you don't foresee using it in the future, part with it to clear space for those items you do use. The fewer items you retain, the easier your organizational efforts will be.

8. As mentioned above, it is best to purchase transparent storage bins, as it is easier to identify the content of the unit. However, whether or not the unit is transparent, always label it so there is no confusion as to what is contained within the unit. I recommend using some type of smudge/water proof pen/marker and large, sticky labels. As you may not be able to list every item on a label, you might want to develop a separate itemized list for each unit. You can either tape this list to the inside of the storage unit cover or put a number on the storage unit label that corresponds to the respective unit's item list. Each unit's list could then be placed in one folder, so access to all lists is easily retrievable.

9. Make an effort to put things back where they belong once you've used them. If this isn't possible at the time, make sure you do so at the end of the day. For some people, this may take practice. When you put items away as soon as you've used them, it'll be easier to find them the next time around, and you'll spend less time doing so.

10. As simplistic as it sounds, make lists for anything important (e.g., groceries, errands). Lists keep you organized. They can also save you time, as they eliminate running to and from the store for items you neglected to put on your list. It is important to keep your lists visible, preferably in a location you visit daily (e.g., on the refrigerator in your kitchen, on your mirror in the bathroom).

11. If organizing your home (or office) is too overwhelming, you can always hire a professional organizer. There are people who organize homes and offices for a living. If hiring a professional organizer is the best option for you, then hire one today.

Unless you are naturally organized, it may take some time to get organized. However, by following the above steps, you will free up valuable time and create a more efficient life.

Playroom Furniture: For Fun and Safety

When you imagine the playroom, the first word that comes to mind is fun and frolic. Therefore, playroom furniture has to have that magical touch to ensure that children are engulfed with maximum fun when they are in the playroom. Toys are the best friends of children and when it comes to playing with toys, kids love to spend more time indulging in playful mood with kids' furniture.

Kids Organizer Bins

Playroom is any kid's favourite place and it is where any kid would love to spend his or her time. However, an adult has to keep in mind that the playroom furniture should be in tune with the playroom's look and mood. To assure that your kid enjoys a healthy playtime, buy him tables, drawers, chairs, benches, which are not only kid friendly but are also quite safe.

Kids Organizer Bins

Playroom Furniture- How it should be?

One of the biggest concerns of parents is what kind of kids' furniture to pick for the playroom. This is because kids love to spend their maximum time in the playroom. Therefore, being the parent your greatest concern is to choose furniture that is safe for even your youngest child.

Storage units play a pivotal role in a child's playroom. The more organized is the storage unit the better it holds stuff to keep the playroom spick-n-span. The storage unit is important furniture that should be decked up with drawers, buckets, bins, chairs, benches so that the overall unit gives a more compact look.

When it comes to seating area, the furniture should look neat and comfortable. Whatever size you choose for the chairs and desks, the size should be apt for the different ages of kids. Therefore, it is best to choose furniture for playroom of various sizes keeping in mind the various age groups who will be love to indulge more in the playroom.

Remember, when you are talking about kids, it means they are all-small and can be inattentive. Therefore, while choosing for kids furniture in playroom, you have to consider the various aspects in mind and then go for your picking foray. Furniture is not solely about chairs and tables but speaks more about a kid's taste and preference. Kids' furniture should not only have great features but there should be some fun element attached to it.

Besides, the kids' furniture shaped in all kinds of animals and toys can be great fun for kids. Just imagine slides, swings and seesaw shaped like elephant, giraffes and lions. This will be great fun and kids will love to indulge in the whole mirth without doubt.

Hence, make it more fun by entertaining kids with furniture that not only look playful, but also is safe for all ages.

The 5 Minute Guide to Organization and Storage for Kids Rooms

Keeping kids rooms neat and tidy is a tremendous chore. Not only do kids have a tremendous talent to destroy a room in the blink of an eye, but they also keep getting more and more stuff. Holidays, birthdays, parties, family reunions, you name it, the kids always come away with something in hand. Of course, whatever they received last is the-most-important-can't-give-that-away-ever-I-love-it-so-much thing--until they get the next thing.

Kids Organizer Bins

In order to manage your kids stuff, you need to know which possessions have real meaning to them. These are those precious items that really are important. They differ from the other stuff in that they have lasting significance to your kids, and they would be hurt if these things were taken from them.

Kids Organizer Bins

On the other hand, a lot of stuff that they get is truly forgettable and disposable. I've noticed with my kids that a new gift gets a lot of attention, but within a very short period of time they get bored with it and move on. This doesn't mean that they won't come back to it some time in the future, but I've gotten to be pretty savvy on what has lasting power, and what's "yesterday's news." This is where smart storage for kids rooms comes in. If you are successful in keeping the stuff down to a reasonable amount, then you can manage your kid's rooms, and the storage of the important things.

Of course, it's the smart and educational thing to include your kids in weeding out useless toys and junk, this teaches them responsibility. The problem is that they tend to have a warped view on these things. Show them a dust-covered plastic thingamajig that you found behind the furnace in the basement (doesn't really matter what) and the usual reaction is "NO, I could never part with that!!! I got it from that person at that thing that time... I love it and play with it all the time!" Sound familiar? I hate to be brutal about it, but organizing your kid's room is best done when they're out of the house.

Okay, let's say you've gotten through phase 1, and you've weeded out the junk. Also, take the time to weed out good toys that your kids simply have outgrown. Don't throw them away; give them to a charitable organization.

Now it's time to organize the stuff that stays into manageable and logical categories. First of all, books and reading materials. These have to be on bookshelves or kids book display shelves. Make them as accessible as possible. The books should be on eye level. Any extra shelf space that you might have on the bookshelves at the top can be for display toys or pictures. There are so many great bookshelves and display shelves nowadays for kids rooms, you should see what's available at The Home Shelving Guide to Kids Shelves. You'll also find great suggestions for kids storage units and even kids revolving bookcases. You are sure to find things to help you get your kid's rooms organized.

Next come games and toys. Obviously not everything can be at eye level and easily accessible, so try to figure out which toys and games are most popular. Anything that is stored higher up should be visible to the kids.

I'm a big believer in baskets and storage bins. While the containers that the toys come in are more colorful and eye-catching, they waste a lot of space since they are all different shapes and sizes. By transferring toys such as Legos or Playmobil pieces to uniform storage containers, you can stack them up and really organize your shelves.

Likewise, bigger items such as stuffed animals and dress-up clothes can be readily stored in baskets. Baskets are easy to handle, easy to work with, and are an economical way to solve your storage needs.

There are really nice cube shelves that are designed specifically to hold storage boxes and baskets. This way, you have an attractive and practical piece of furniture which will hold the boxes and add color to the room at the same time.

Wall-mounted shelves are also a great way to organize stuff. While they usually aren't very big, they have the extra added bonus of adding color and character to a room. Most kid's rooms have available wall space which you can take advantage of, and kill two birds with one stone. You can decorate AND store things at the same time.

It all starts with you knowing what's available to help you get your kid's room into shape. Once you have a good idea of what you need, and also a plan for organizing the toys, books, games and other stuff, all you need to do is be tough and do it!

Closet Organization Tools

Garment Racks: Garment racks can be good organizational tools. They help to evacuate bulky or rarely used items from your closet. You can still access the items on the garment rack, but you can hide it away in an extra room, freeing up space in your closet.

Kids Organizer Bins

Shoe Racks: The type of shoe rack you choose can depend on what space you have where and also how many shoes you own. Over the door shoe racks are good if you don't have very much space. Some people like to build a system of cubbies that can hold shoes from the floor to the ceiling in a closet without taking up much space. Shoe racks that sit at the bottom of the closet are most popular. This is where most people have some space without redesigning the whole closet. Shoe racks do not have to be an eye-sore either. They come in beautiful furniture-like designs that do not even look like they are shoe organizers.

Kids Organizer Bins

Closet Organizers: Hanging shelves can add a lot of space to your closet and give you special places to put all of those little things. You can add drawers and shelves to your closet to eliminate the need for dressers or to add extra storage to your room. Some people like to use baskets, bins and crates to hide away messy looking items. Use large bins for seasonal storage and put them away on a top shelf. This will keep those items safe from dust and moths.

Specialty Hangers: There are all kinds of specialty hangers to help you organize those odds and ends. Tie and belt accessory hangers are really useful and inexpensive. Just one can free up a dresser drawer and keep your ties wrinkle free. Tiered hangers are great for making space. You can usually hang about five pairs of pants on a tiered hanger, another space saving option. Tiered hangers may have clips that you can hang shorts or skirts from, saving even more space.

Clothes Hangers: Your hanger selection should be made with a few things in mind. First, consider the space that you have. Slim-Line hangers take up very little space. Wooden hangers are beautiful, help your clothes hold the right shape and are so durable that they could possibly last your entire lifetime. These are best for suits and coats, but most people just like them for their beauty and durability. Glam Hangers are beaded in all different colors to make a kid's closet really special. Velvet coated hangers are really great for items that can easily slip. Satin clothes hangers are great for lingerie and other delicate fabrics.

How to Organize Your Kids' Toys

Kids seem to have tons of stuff. It seems like you just get their toys cleaned up and, in a matter of minutes, it doesn't look like you've cleaned it in a week! That's probably a good sign that you need to make it easier to put things away. It's also a good time to get the kids involved with the clean up, too. You'll be teaching them valuable lessons that they will need through life including responsibility, respect and caring/sharing and they will feel a sense of pride and accomplishment.

Kids Organizer Bins

1. Sort toys into groups, ie. dolls, trucks, books, etc.

Kids Organizer Bins

2. Throw out anything that is broken right away.

3. Have your kids help decide what to donate. By giving them the option to choose, you are showing respect for their opinion. And, though it may be hard for them to let go of some things even though they don't use them anymore, you'll be helping them to become thoughtful sharers.

4. Group toys in bins that are easily accessible. Once what's being kept has been decided, try to make toys as easy as possible to put away.

5. Label the bins. For little ones who can't read, take a picture of the contents of a bin so they can easily learn where their toys go. For older kids, use words.

6. Reward kids for helping and for giving their unused toys to someone who will appreciate them.

7. Keep a basket in various rooms of the house where your kids play so that at the end of the day, they can easily be carried back where they belong.

8. Use the "one thing in, one thing out" rule. Whenever they get a new toy, they should try to get rid of one they don't use anymore.

9. Repeat this process before celebrations where the kids will receive loads of gifts, such as birthdays or Christmas.

Get Control of Your Craft Room

A properly organized craft room will give you the most time to enjoy the actual crafting whether you are sewing, quilting, knitting, or beading. Nothing will slow you down more than getting frustrated trying to find the supplies you need when you need them the most. With so many different types of supplies to store this can be a constant struggle here are a few tips to keep things under control.

Kids Organizer Bins

An optimal height for most standing workbenches will be between 36 and 40 inches. Scientific studies suggest tables should be 80% of your elbow height for the least amount of strain on back, neck and arm muscles. You can block a table up with extensions or cut legs down to achieve suitable height. A comfy swivel chair you can adjust to your body type is essential for seated work station. Store most used tools in open containers on your work desk so they will be immediately accessible. Mount an adjustable light to provide plenty of light wherever you will need it. For finite work such as beading you might consider one fitted with a magnifying glass.

Kids Organizer Bins

Clear plastic containers are great for storing your assortment of buttons, beads, pom poms, and dried flowers. Install plenty of shelving or stackable storage bins to maximize use of wall space. Cloth materials can be neatly folded and placed in clear storage bins of similar color and pattern. Alternatively you can hang up cloth on clothes hangers in a closet. Multi slack hangers will allow you to hang similar types of fabric on the same hanger. The advantage over plastic storage bins is being able to pull out a whole set and hold it next to your project to see which one goes best. Quilters will want to put similar colored fat quarters in drawers. Storing fabrics in a closet on clothes hangers limits exposure to sunlight which causes discoloration. Cloth sealed up in bins cannot breath. When hanging fabrics it is less likely for moisture to form and colors to bleed.

Maintain a neat and tidy craft room and it will continue to be an enjoyable place to hone your crafting skills to expert levels for years to come. Stay ahead of the game and do a little tidying ever day this way you will never be faced with the overwhelming task of sorting out a monumental mess. Be gentle but firm with yourself, as you develop these habits and you will find your efficiency increasing along with the quality of your work.

Handy Dandy Scrapbooking Storage Ideas

If you are a scrapbooker, then you know exactly what I mean when I say that if you dont control your scrapbooking supplies, then they control you! This is what typically happens when you get into scrapbooking and dont really pay attention to the mess that is accumilating. And whos to blame you. When it comes to scrapbooking, there are so many different pieces, clippings, and tools to take care of. So, lucky enough, I have been able to find some helpful tips in scrapbooking storage and tips on making an effective scrapbooking storage system.

Kids Organizer Bins

There are plenty of reasons for proper scrapbooking storage, and my personal reason is time saving and saving myself from frustration. Nothing makes me madder then trying to find that one piece, or my special cutter, and having to dig through piles of other stuff to get to it. I like to use clear plastic bins that are clearly labeled, so that when the time comes that I do need something, I can find it. Another advantage of creating a scrapbook storage system is to save your supplies from getting damaged. You of course have natural disasters like certain pictures getting sun damaged, but then you also have every day disasters, such as kids or dogs. I know our little dog has cost us quite a bit when things get left out. She love to chew up just about anything that gets left out. By keeping everything in plastic bins, she really cant get into them.

Kids Organizer Bins

You might also want to think about keeping our your supplies together. That way you dont have to go chasing parts or tools all around the house when it comes time to start, or continue, working on a project. I put my supplies in those plastic bins I mentioned ealier, but I was also able to put the little wheels underneath, so my scrapbooking station is mobile! Just a thought.

So, all in all, here is a recap of some basic scrapbooking storage tips. I would use some sort of clear plastic storage, whether its plastic bins or ziploc baggys. This will allow you to identify pretty quickly whats in each storage device. Secondly, make sure you keep your storage out of harms way. If you got kids, place it in hard to reach areas. This will help them from digging through your so neatly organized scrapbooking supplies. Kids tend to have a way of doing that. Also, my personal favorite, if you can pull it off put wheels on the bottom of your storage system. This will make it mobile incase you need to move to another room in a hurry. I know I dont have enough space in my home to deticate just one room to crafts, so where I work on my scrapbooking changes from day to day.
