The Tradition of Christmas Decorating

People all over the world celebrate Christmas or some form of holiday around the end of December or the first part of January. These celebrations are accompanied by decorations and we are going to focus on Christmas Decorations. The decorations that are used have long histories in the celebration of this holiday. Fir trees decorated with roses, gilded candy, colored paper, and apples were popular in 16th century Germany. Later, Protestant Martin Luther decorated a fir tree with lights. He created the effect of shining stars by placing candles on the branches of a small fir tree that he cut down and placed in his home. The traditions are centuries old, but today we continue with this time honored way of celebrating Christmas.

Old country people a couple of generations back remember the Christmas lights being small white candles on the trees inside the home and outside as well. The spectacular displays are particularly seen in the United States more so than in other countries, though some countries come close with their spectacular displays also. The history of Christmas lights began when Edward Johnson, an employee of Thomas Edison created a set of 80 red, white and blue lights. At Christmas he decorated a tree in the town square with these bulbs and wowed the public.

Christmas Tree Decorations

Angels are a mainstay of decorations for traditional decorating. As far back as the 1880's the heavenly cherubs have made an appearance in the decorations used inside homes, and outside in public displays. Even Buddhists, Islamic believers, Hindus and Jewish cultures incorporate angels in their holiday decorations.

Colorful Christmas balls are a tradition that is very near and dear to the heart of many who have collected decorations through the years. From the highly prized antique hand-blown Christmas balls all the way to machine pressed copies of the great decorations of the past, everyone incorporates the kaleidoscope of color in the holiday scenes. Many families have turned decorating for Christmas a great holiday tradition where the whole family comes to one home and decorates, eats good food and gets ready for the holiday season. The old decorations that are so treasured are bolstered with new additions each year, sometimes all in one theme or a hodge-- podge of different decorations depicting all walks of life, ethnicities and traditions of the Christmas spirit.
